The term ‘crystal engineering’ was initially used in 1971 by Schmidt associated with photodimerisation reactions within crystalline cinnamic acids. Crystal engineering is the design and functionality of molecular solid-state buildings with desired houses, based on a preliminary understanding and exploitation associated with intermolecular interactions. The two key strategies currently utilized for crystal engineering use hydrogen bonding in addition to coordination complexation.
